pictures of my collection of chives

My collection of chives (Allium schoenoprasum) at the moment are all growing in pots, ranging from 1 litre (small plants, new accessions) up to 10 litre. In most cases I have more that one "plant" (as they are clumps of many bulbs) of each accession (individual plants acquired). They are dotted around the garden and pathways around the house. I hope in future years to plant out as many as poosible in special display beds in the ground to see how differently they grow with no root restrictions and plenty of water all the time from the soil. This can make a difference as I know from growing mints (another passion of mine) in containers.

August 2021

Here are some pictures of the plants as they were on the 11th August 2021. In most cases all the flowers had been cut off as they had gone over, together with the leaves which is the easiest way to do it, and it encourages new young leaf regrowth. You can see different stages of regrowth.

three cultivars 2021 from The Herb Centre; sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata) trying to get into the picture

two pots each of 'Silver Chimes' and a possible purple-ish variant from it, the oldest Collection accessions

lots of pots in semi-shade, with 'Black Isle Blush' showing off in the foreground

more 9" green pots, heading towards the front gate, how did that ash seedling get there

more cultivars in larger pots: mints (Mentha sp. & cvs.) in pots in the background; mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum) in the foreground

newest accessions, often arrive as very small plants and need nurturing for the first season; mints next to the chives, with so-called blue chives (Allium nutans) and variegated sage on the other

May 2022

Here are some pictures of the plants before and during flowering in May and June 2022. Comparing the different shades of purple, pink, and white, provided paler purple, creamy white and a further shadesof pink.

smaller size plants and pots - red labels show accessions with only one plant so far

cultivar 'Pink Perfection' bud opening (in real life it is more cerise)

outside propagator, used for hardening off seedlings; seed grown indoors with growlight

cultivar 'Black Isle Blush', without central flower colour, yet - very common appearance

I need a bit of compost for all those pots

new arrivals - often plants are very small - they are rare

yes it is chives; a "flowerhead" of Allium schoenoprasum 'Cha Cha'
